Starting any remodeling project takes planning, but a few weeks (or sometimes more) without a functioning bathroom can be more than a slight nuisance for many homeowners. Check out these tips to consider before beginning a bathroom renovation.
Set an Appropriate Budget
Your bathroom is one of the key features in your home–especially when considering the resale value. Trying to pull off an inexpensive bathroom remodel is not a great idea, either. It’s one room of your home where spending the money will more than likely be a good investment for the rest of your home. Consider the size of your bathroom, features you’d like included, the quality of materials, and whether or not you plan on doing the renovations yourself when creating the budget.
Timing
Renovations to your bathroom can create quite a disruption to you and your families’ everyday life. While your bathroom is being renovated, you might not have access to it, meaning you’ll need a second location to shower and use the facilities. It’s important to plan this accordingly.
Ventilation and Moisture Control
One of the most important factors in a bathroom is having appropriate ventilation and moisture control. Poor ventilation and moisture control lead to mold growth – a common problem for many bathrooms. A well-ventilated bathroom is a healthy bathroom and allows airflow to circulate. This will keep your materials (wooden trim, fixtures, etc.) in better condition.
Lighting
Bathrooms are often the room in which people prepare for their day. Without the right lighting, it can make it more difficult to brush our teeth, comb our hair, or check our reflection in the mirror. Especially if you are utilizing natural lighting, consider the placement and wattage of lighting fixtures. Experts say you should have at least 4 watts of incandescent lighting per square foot of bathroom space.
Plumbing and Fixtures
Once you make major layout plans, you can hone in on more detailed choices, like the fixtures and features in your bathroom. Remember to include all fixtures, including those in the shower, bathtub, toilet, and sink. Matching faucets, handles, and showerheads will add a special touch to your bathroom. You can change the look of your bathroom quickly and easily by replacing door handles and drawer pulls. If you really want to change the look of your bathroom and have the budget available, a new set of shower doors will transform the room.
