5 Warning Signs That Your Windows Need Replacing

|

Summer is a popular time to replace windows in your home. Of course, keeping out the cold is one of the main jobs of a functional window, so when the weather is warmer, replacing a window can be a planned project, not an emergency.

Before you decide to replace your windows, you should learn the telltale signs of failing windows.

Condensation

Fluctuating temperatures can lead to condensation, but if you notice that your windows are “sweating” excessively on cold days, it might mean the glazing and gas fill are no longer working properly. The seals that hold in the gas between window panes will not be as effective over time, causing the gas to escape and moisture to infiltrate the window.

Cold Drafts

If you notice a draft every time you are near a window or notice your energy bills rising, your windows might be to blame. Not only does this mean the rooms in your home will be less comfortable, but it will also cost you more money to heat and cool your home and will make your HVAC system work harder than it needs to.

Water or Rot Damage

Extreme weather (just like the weather we experience in Minnesota) is rough on windows. Add this on top of an aging window, and it’s easy for rot, mold, and water damage to result in cracks, broken glass, chipping, or decaying windows.

Difficulty Opening or Closing

It’s natural for older windows to become difficult to open and close. Aging windows develop balance issues, meaning they often jam and stick. Further, rust or rot can add to these issues and make them worse.

Disruptive Outside Noise

Birds chirping outside your window might be a pleasant way to wake up in the morning, but you would hardly want to hear every car drive past, every neighborhood conversation, or every nearby dog barking.  The area you live in may not be to blame. For a more relaxing living space, you might need to replace your windows.
