Your roof is critical to your home. It’s essential for shelter and protecting you and your family from the elements outside. Your roof is the first point of contact between your home and summer storms. Severe weather is unpredictable and thus, it’s hard to prepare for. Between tornados, hail damage, strong winds, and heavy rains, Minnesota summer storms can be devastating on your property. This is particularly true for roof damage. Here are a few tips for you to consider after the storm:
Obviously, it’s important to wait until you’re certain the storm has passed before you hop up on the roof to inspect the damage. Even if the skies look clear there could be another storm on the way. Or, there could be other damage you can’t see that makes the situation unsafe. Make sure you’re extra careful about your safety.
Now the coast is clear you can look for clear signs of storm damage. Look for missing shingles or gaps in the pattern. You may see shingles on the ground or in the road that flew off of your roof. If your shingles are curled, cracked, bent, or broken you know you’ve got some damage to deal with. All roof types will display damage differently but in general missing, cracked, or curling shingles is a good indicator that your roof has been damaged.
Sometimes you’ll notice other signs that point to roof damage. Water leaking into your home is a pretty clear sign but it’s not always so blatant. If you notice a musty or moldy smell you should check to see if the water is coming in through the roof.
If you do notice damage, be sure to document the damage so that you can show your insurance company when you submit your claim. Also, make sure you give Minnesota Home Improvements a call so we can come fix the damage for you so you can move on with your summer!
