Backyard Buying Guide: Pergolas vs. Gazebos

|

Pergolas and gazebos are classic outdoor structures that offer shade and style to your home. Both can be made of wood, vinyl, fiberglass, or a range of other materials, but they have a few key differences to consider when purchasing one for your home.

What is a Pergola?

Composed of an open crossbeam roof supported by columns, pergolas come in all shapes, sizes, and styles. A popular option with many homeowners is the inclusion of a retractable roof, allowing the enjoyment of full shade, but all that’s needed is a cover that can be thrown over the top when it’s exceedingly hot out. If you’re more of a DIYer, then you’re in luck. There are a ton of different plans available for free online to help you design your pergola.

What is a Gazebo?

Unlike pergolas, most gazebos are raised off the ground and include a closed roof. Tall, freestanding, rounded structures, gazebos are most often constructed of stone, wood, or iron. They can frequently be found on larger properties, situated over scenic views or gardens. Gazebo construction is usually more labor-intensive than that of the pergola, but there are still plenty of DIY plans to consider when debating whether to hire a professional.

Is a Pergola or a Gazebo Right for You?

Look at your neighborhood before idealizing a certain outdoor structure. Maintaining a bit of consistency throughout your neighborhood will raise property values at large. Are the structures nearby more circular or rectangular? Gazebos would fit more with the rounded structures, and a pergola would mesh better with rectangular ones. There’s no need to go on a backyard tour to see what structures are consistent in your neighborhood, though it may help with some ideas.

Something else to consider is your use of outdoor space. A gazebo will normally take up more room than a pergola, so positioning it a certain distance away from your home is important for maximizing the use of your outdoor space.

What’s the weather like in your area? Gazebos will keep you dry, but they won’t let in as much sun and can obstruct more of your view than a pergola does.
