Garage Door Makeovers

|

Renovating your garage door can improve your home’s curb appeal and resale value. According to the Remodeling 2019 Cost vs. Value Report, investing in garage door replacement is one of the easiest ways to improve your home’s value when it’s time to sell. According to the report, 93.3% of the cost of replacing your garage door is recouped when sold. It’s also one of only two projects that returned above 75% of the original cost.

With that said, here are a few of our favorite makeover ideas to change the look of your garage door without breaking the bank.

Decorate Your Garage Door with Faux Windows or Hardware

For an easy low-cost DIY project, paint four paint stirring sticks black and glue them just above the joints on your door. This mimics the look of long, black, studded metal hinges sometimes seen on vintage garage doors.

Another popular technique is painting, and sometimes framing, glossy black faux windows along the top of a garage. Combine faux windows with magnetically attaching faux hardware to give your garage door a budget-friendly facelift.

Get an Overlay for your Garage Door

With a wide variety of veneers featuring different colors, textures, and wood patterns, garage door overlays can quickly change the entire external appearance of your home. With cold Minnesota winters, it can be challenging to stay warm while working on projects in the garage. This is a problem of the past with insulated garage overlays adding a layer of heat retainment that will look stylish and keep your fingers and toes warm.

Paint Your Garage Door

Repainting a garage door can be an arduous process, but that hard work pays for itself with the refreshed look of your garage door. With a few lovely summer days for the paint to dry and a decent level of attention to detail, this will help to increase the length of time your garage door is protected from the elements.

Replace Your Garage Door

At a certain point, it becomes more cost-effective to just replace the door entirely. You can spruce up an old door as much as you want with insulated overlays, magnetic aesthetic hardware, and a new paint job, but if the machine itself is going bad, replacement is the best option. In the end, what will be more budget-friendly? Constantly pouring repair money into an increasingly ancient model? Or a stylish new model that immediately increases the value of your home?
